How Safe are the Trampolines for Children?
As a parent, we are worried about the fact that our children are spending most of time playing with their phones and gadgets indoors. A lot of their time goes in texting and they do not have time to make eye contact. It’s not the children who are not active. They want to find something which is fun and not competition. Something which does not involve schedules and practice sessions and they can easily have fun while being in the house backyard. Some sort of activity is required for keeping them fit and something which can be enjoyed by the entire family. So then you think of buying a trampoline for the house. But the main matter of concern is whether these trampolines are safe for your children or not?
According to American Academy of Pediatrics:
The American Academy of Pediatrics is highly reputed and generally approves the limited usage of these trampolines in various training programs associated with diving and gymnastics. But adult supervision is very important whenever a kid is jumping on the trampoline and the safety guidelines should be followed strictly.
Let’s compare the safety of the kids while they are jumping on trampolines to riding a bike:
There is no denying the fact that riding a bicycle is also fulfilled activity just like trampolining and can be enjoyed by the entire family. But according to studies and the data issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in the year 2005, almost more than 669 kids had to be taken to the emergency room because of bicycle accidents. This is much more than the number of injuries due to playing basketball.
Let’s now compare safety aspects of trampolining to that of swimming:
I think all of you will agree with me on this one that swimming is a great way of staying in shape and this activity can be enjoyed thoroughly by the entire family. But definitely this involves some expenditure and quite a lot of maintenance. But as a parent, you just don’t mind all this till the time your kid is perfectly safe, is having fun and remains fit. You feel it’s totally worth the effort. But it’s high time that you pay attention to the accidents which are caused because of diving and swimming. In fact, you will be shocked to know that there have been many accidents leading to spinal cord and head injuries. I must mention here that there have been various pool accidents due to which about 82,300 children were taken to the emergency room. So let’s just scratch swimming as the activity is not at all safe for your kid.
It’s important to know about some of the other activities in which your kids are involved these days:
Cheer leading is one activity which seems very enticing to the girls. You need to know that the Consumer Product Safety Commission states that cheer leading is one sport which is highly prone to injuries. This has also been confirmed by a prestigious Ohio State University. It reported that almost 27,000 gymnasts are hospitalized each year because of this sport. This is definitely not something which we wish for our kid. So now we have discussed about the safety of your girl child while being associated with cheer leading. What about your son who is busy playing basketball? Have you thought about his safety while he’s out there on the ground? As a matter of fact, because of this popular sport almost half a million children land up in the ER every year. Also, there is a big risk of damages being caused to the anterior crucial ligament.
So what choices are you left with?
By now you know that almost every kind of physical activity is associated with risks. The injuries can be so terrible that you might just have to take the child to the ER. But it is also very important for the kid to leave that couch and be actively engaged in a fun filled activity which keeps him active and fit. Studies reveal that obesity is on a rise in the present modern world. Since 1963, the cases of obesity among children have increased almost three times. So it is very important to know about some of the other activities which can channelize the energy of the child in the right way and are absolutely safe for the child.
Activities which are 100 per cent safe for your kid:
It is a well established fact that obesity in kids is a major threat to the health. It is more dangerous than drug use or smoking. The children who are overweight are more prone to high cholesterol, blood pressure and even Type 2 diabetes. And you can’t even imagine what major effects obesity can have on the confidence of your child. A kid can face major issues like depression. Being a couch potato is not at all desirable, but we don’t even want the child to end up in the emergency room. So we are now back to the trampoline research. These can be used for training purpose, but adult supervision is recommended at all times. Also, it is important to note that the safety measures are being used and the trampoline is properly maintained and safe. In fact, some of the new things which have been introduced effectively make the trampolines more safe like spring-free trampolines.
- One basic rule is that only one jumper should be allowed to use the trampoline.
- The kids who are under 6 years of age should never be allowed to use the trampoline.
- No flips, somersaults, tricks, or any of such activities should be allowed without supervision and advanced training.
- Presence of an adult for supervision is a must and the safety rules need to be enforced.
- You need to make sure that the trampoline is well maintained and supports additional features like a safety net enclosure and protective padding for reducing the chances of injuries.
- Also, you can educate your child about the importance of the safety rules and regulations.
